Above is a rose-breasted grosbeak visiting one of my backyard habitat feeders.
The gorgeous creature below is an indigo bunting. Their visits are always welcome.

Along with feeders and nesting boxes we keep a few brushpiles, water sources, and plants for the birds, squirrels, chipmonks, and rabbits to enjoy.
Turning my backyard into a wildlife friendly habitat is a contribution to the welfare of this planet that I could make and enjoy the benefits of each day. I am happy to be among the 70,000 plus National Wildlife Federation's Certified Wildlife Habitats. My number is 54 thousand and something. They have a goal of 100,000 certified habitats. If you have even a patch of land you can participate.
I have found myself more and more concerned for and interested in the wellbeing of our environment. Every change you make to conserve and preserve will contribute to this cause.
Shop your conscience. Take the time to learn which corporations are contributing to the support of environmental advocacy and welfare. Spend your money there when possible. The old adage that money talks is true, so let's speak with our wallets so that the corporations and governments can hear us.
We all have a stake in the future of life on this wondrous planet. Be a part of the solution. Your choices can help our planet.

One person's trash is another person's treasure.
Reuse, repurpose, recycle.
Have you heard of Freecyle? It provides a way to keep all those "things" we have from ending up in a landfill and help members of your community. This is truly a local way to make a difference. Go to freecycle.org to find the group nearest you.

Birdwatching is one of my favorite things to do. Along with the squirrels, chipmonks, rabbits, butterflies, and other creatures in my backyard. I build nesting boxes. Above is a nuthatch collecting a bit of cat hair I "recycled" from the fluffy indoor cat. Those little birds will have a very soft nest!

_________________________ WOW!
An awesome sight and yet upsetting.
Feb. 18, 2007, I walked out my back door and saw unfamiliar movement. As I got down the steps, I stopped in absolute awe at the sight of three white-tailed deer standing at the back of my yard staring at me. It took my breath away. Only too briefly and they were off along the fence into the next yard and beyond. Truly awesome because in 16 years of living here that has never happened.
Disturbing beyond measure because it shows me their habitat is being destroyed and they are looking for a place to go. The neighborhood where I live used to be tucked into the woods. The so-called "progress" in this area, which when I came here was wooded for miles and composed of multi-acre farms are being sold off, cleared, and built on, is a decimation of habitat.
Their home is turning into subdivisions and shopping malls. Everywhere I drive in this metro area is being cleared for new developments. It makes me sick! Where is our regard for wildlife and natural areas? Why are all the wild places disappearing?
I prefer woods, fields and wildlife! ___________________________________ |

STUBBY stopped by for a drink.
Stubby is the little fella with a stub of a tail who sparked my interest in squirrel watching. He wasa regular visitor for over four years. The lack of tail did not affect his agility at all but he was definitely a squirrel with attitude! Or just supreme confidence? Whatever it was, Stubby pretty much ran the show at the feeder table whenever he was there. Stubby always made me smile.
It has been two years now since he left us but I content myself that some of the younger ones here now are his offspring. A few certainly have his fiesty attitude. I miss the little guy but he left me with an appreciation for squirrels and their antics.
Stubby shows his agility. You would think he was satisfied with his own banquet table..... but noooooo. | Tiger swallowtail sipping from a butterfly bush.

Animal Welfare / Environmental Conservation
In Our Own Best Interests..... We live here. We need to take care of our home and its inhabitants. Instead of destroying habitat in the pursuit of the allmighty dollar (or whatever your currency) we need to protect, preserve, and share our resouces. It has taken humankind only a few generations to adversely affect our environment. We have destroyed and endangered not only other species, but ourselves, with our consumption and abuse of the environment. It will take our efforts, yours and mine, to bring us back from this brink. Step up. Do whatever you can and let your government know they need to do the same. No rant, I just want to promote awareness so that we can all take steps to protect our environment.
Here are a few animal welfare, habitat preservation and environmental conservation organizations. There are many more excellent websites and organizations but I can only list a small number of them. If you care, please go to the websites and do what you can... whether it be a donation, signing a petition, buying products that support the organization or volunteering.
Be sure to support your local animal rescue and welfare groups. Promote no-kill shelters. Spay or neuter your own pets so they won't contribute to the intolerable number of unwanted and unloved companion animals.
Learn to be eco-friendly and preserve this beautiful planet and it's amazing inhabitants. Please, act before it is too late.
Global warming is wreaking havoc with the well-being of polar bears, their habitat is literally melting and that is just the start of it.... It is affecting our weather patterns and that effects all of us.
If we all will do even a little it will make a difference. If we really make an effort to live green who knows what we can accomplish. __________________________________________________________________________
